O’Brien is currently serving a 40-year driving ban.

O’Brien, aged 32, with an address at Whitebrook Park, Tallaght, had pleaded guilty to having no insurance at McUilliam Crescent, Tallaght, on September 13, 2017.

He was before Judge McNamara for sentencing.

A Probation Officer told the judge that O’Brien had missed two out of three appointments with the Probation Service.

Sergeant Michael Ahern told Judge McNamara that O’Brien had not come to garda attention since the last date.

He said O’Brien had 99 previous convictions.

On April 20 last, he had received a five-month suspended sentence and an eight-year ban for no insurance.

Sgt Ahern added that on June 30, 2014, O’Brien had been sentenced to five months jail with the last two months suspended and received a 40-year ban for no insurance.

O’Brien told Judge McNamara that he had missed the meetings with the Probation Service because he had court dates.

Judge McNamara told O’Brien: “You can’t just flout the road traffic laws and go around driving without insurance.”

She sentenced O’Brien to five months jail with a 10-year ban for having no insurance.

O’Brien’s solicitor, Padraig O’Donovan, asked Judge McNamara if she would consider suspending the sentence. Judge McNamara said she wouldn’t.
