Dublin team scoop the annual county challenge at the Roadstone Club

DUBLIN has another national champion.

After the successes of Ger Ward and JR Crangle earlier in the season, Maree O’Toole from the Shandon Club struck gold in the beautiful Cloghogue Course in Newry on Saturday. Maree, who lives in Palmerstown, was the only lady in her section to break par after shooting -1 to win the title by six shots in fine style.

Maree a regular on the Dublin Inter county team has been a wonderful exponent of the game and a terrific ambassador both on and off the course, carrying out wonderful coaching prog-rammes for members in the Shandon club.

She will be a hugely popular winner on the circuit. No joy in the gents’ event on Sunday as titles went to the host club, Tipperary and Louth.

On Saturday the Dublin Gents Inter team played well to comfortably defeat Westmeath in the annual county challenge match in RGSC.

The team featuring local players from CPM, Lucan and Old County as well as players from Erin’s Isle and Portmarnock led by 5 shots after the scotch foursomes, but pulled away after steady performances from all players in the singles.

The players, with their senior counterparts, turn their attention to the Leinster Inter County in Lough Owel, Mullingar on August 12 and 13.

In the National Under 16 matchplay championships, Dublin’s sole representative Lennon Blake from Old County sailed through the group stages but lost out 3 & 2 in the last 16 to Deerpark’s Cillian Courtney.
