Éanna off the mark at the expense of Lions
DBS Éanna blasted out of the blocks on their return to action in the Men’s Super League as they recorded as 54-76 point victory over county rivals Abbey Seals Dublin Lions in Colaiste Bride on Saturday evening.
In what was the curtain raiser to the Men’s Super League this season, the Rathfarnham side rocketed into a 17-point advantage by the close of the first quarter.
DBS Éanna made it a winning start to their season
A combination of some great defending by the likes of Mark Reynolds together with some clinical finishing at the other end of the court by Stefan Zecevic laid the foundation for an early win.
“We really came out of the blocks fast” said Éanna Head Coach Darren McGovern.
“Defensively we were excellent. Mark Reynolds was great in defence and really set the tone for us and helped us limit them to nine points in the first quarter, so we were 26-9 up.
“Everyone contributed. Stefan Zecevic hit a couple of three points and easy baskets and Marco Tomic our new Serbian power forward was excellent, so intelligent and he made 18 rebounds.
“We were happy at half time but we knew they would come at us and we had to be ready for that.
“They hit three three-pointers about four minutes into the third quarter and cut the deficit almost in half. But we took a time out to change things a little. None of the players panicked and they began finding guys for easy lay-ups” he recalled.
Dublin Lions lost out to their Rathfarnham rivals on Saturday
Lions did work hard in an effort to find a way back into contention with Muhamed Sabic and Tomas Mikalauskas combining for 23 points while Finn Hughes chipped in with eight, but it was not enough to really trouble their opponents.
Éanna will also be encouraged by the performance of Dan Heaney and Ireland Under 16 player Milo Herbst who made his debut for the team and also registered his first score in the Super League.
They will be hoping to make it two from two in the league when they welcome Killorglin to Colaiste Éanna on Saturday while Lions will be looking to bounce back quickly against DCU Saints that same day.
