Echo Sports Awards 2019: Davis are declared Club of the Year
THOMAS Davis GAA Club scooped ‘The Echo 2019 Club of the Year’ Award after a season that saw them make massive progress and enjoy success on virtually all fronts.
Indeed the huge ground the club has made this year was encapsulated in the superb run of their senior footballers all the way to the Dublin Championship Final- their first appearance in that decider in some 28 years.
Thomas Davis GAA Club officials Adam Gallon, Dean Cahill, Jimmy Owens, Danny McCann, Dominic Finnegan, Zak Moradi and Colin Brrown received ‘The Echo 2019 Club of the Year’ accolade in the Green Isle Hotel.
That team most certainly ripped up the script for this year’s competition beating the likes of 2017 finalists Castleknock and defending champions Kilmacud Crokes en route to the title match where they were eventually pipped by Ballyboden St Enda’s.
The club also made it to the Minor Football Championship decider where they were undone by Castleknock while the Junior hurlers and footballers also enjoyed success this year and their Ladies senior footballers recorded superb runs this season.
Indeed three of that team, Siobhan McGrath, Olwen Carey and Ciara McGuigan were all on the Dublin Senior Football panel that landed a third straight All-Ireland title under manager Mick Bohan.
Delighted at receiving ‘The Echo Club Development’ Award on behalf of the club, Thomas Davis’ outgoing Chairperson, Dominic Finnegan said “We were just so honoured and taken aback to win the award on the night.
“When you looked around the room and saw the calibre of clubs there and all the work that they have done too, it was a real privilege to receive that award.
“I’m delighted for the club members who put all the work in. We can put systems in place, but they need to be implemented.
“We were €2.8 million in debt, but over the last four years all the committee just put their heads together to put in place a plan that would allow us to clear that.
“Now the new committee coming in will just have to concentrate on the sport itself and just a few fundraisers” he pointed out.
