IN OCTOBER, the latest delay in the opening of Lucan Swimming Pool was described as the “least surprising announcement of the year”, according to Independent councillor, Paul Gogarty. 

Plans for the Lucan pool are in place for years but were unlikely to be completed by the end of the year.

There were also calls in October to quell the number of bonfires as Halloween approached. 

Renewed calls were made for community-led Halloween activities to quell the number of bonfires in the lead-up to the holiday, which as it turned out, didn’t go too badly.

Figures released showed that Dublin Fire Brigade responded to over 7,750 incidents in the first half of the year with 85 new firefighters being recruited to the force.

Following an extensive recruitment campaign earlier in 2023, a panel of 216 potential firefighters was created.

A-list actor Liam Neeson was ‘taken’ by surprise after receiving a portrait from former St Paul’s, Greenhills student Lauren White Murphy in New York.

Lauren, a multi-talented writer, composer and actor in the US, presented the Ballymena man with a painting of him and his late mother Kitty at a fundraiser at the Irish Consulate.

The South Dublin County Business Awards returned after a Covid-induced absence, with a full house at the Maldron Hotel, Tallaght, making up for lost time and enjoying a great night of celebration.

A planning application for the demolition of the Speaker Conolly pub in Firhouse and the construction of an 85-unit apartment block (artist’s impression above)was  submitted to South Dublin County Council in October.

Ms Carey referred to Israel as a “terrorist state” that was “guilty of the crime of apartheid due to its racist policies against the Palestinian people”.
