The draft development plan was launched by Mayor Sarah Holland, who said: “The County Development Plan represents an opportunity for all citizens, businesses, community groups and stakeholders across South Dublin County to have their say on the future growth of our county.
“I encourage all interested parties and the public to engage in this public consultation process.”

Drafting of the development plan has taken place in recent months under the direction of Eddie Taaffe, the director of land use, planning and transportation, along with all elected members of the council and over 30 staff from various council departments.
The policies and objectives of this development plan are quality of life, prosperity, sustainability, health and wellbeing, social inclusion and climate change adaptation.

Housing is one of the core strategies of the development plan, with identification of over 32,000 additional houses needed throughout South Dublin County with over 8,300 of those units for social housing.
Strategies proposed as part of the plan include a 15 per cent social housing requirement for all housing developments, and to facilitate the development of emergency accommodation throughout the county.

A swimming pool for the Lucan area, links between IT Tallaght and employment areas and existing community facilities and the development of new post primary schools in Kingswood, Lucan, Saggart/Citywest, Newcastle/ Rathcoole and Ballycullen/Firhouse/Knocklyon are included as part of the objectives for community infrastructure.
The development of greenways, local heritage trails throughout the county as part of the economic development and tourism strategy has been proposed, along with the development of regional and national sporting venues in locations served by high frequency public transport.

A six-year road programme throughout the county to upgrade existing links and create new links is proposed as part of the transport and mobility strategy.
One of the new objectives of the draft plan is the establishment of a green infrastructure network across the county during the lifetime of the plan.

A number of public information sessions have been organised across the county, with members of the county development plan team available to answer questions about the draft development plan over the coming weeks.
The draft development plan will be on display across the county for the next 10 weeks, with submissions or observations on the plan accepted until September 24.
