Extremely difficult to install bottle banks due to rejections

Efforts to install bottle banks in North Clondalkin have proven extremely difficult, although South Dublin County Council continue to investigate possible locations.
In October, The Echo reported that local shopping centres rejected requests to locate bottle banks at their sites, with illegal dumping cited as the main concern.

The council were also rebuffed by the Church of Immaculate Heart of Mary and residents in St Mark’s signed a petition to block a proposal for a bottle bank in their estate.
In response to questions from councillors Madeleine Johansson and Jonathan Graham at the recent Clondalkin area meeting, SDCC said the only exception for a proposed location at the time was along the Neilstown Road.
Since October, SDCC have investigated a number of other sites in North Clondalkin.
According to SDCC, permission was refused by Knockmitten Youth and Community Centre for a bottle bank, however further discussions are “ongoing with the relevant stakeholders.”
A green space on the left-hand side of Cherrywood Villas has been inspected and found suitable. Of the 20 letters distributed to residents within a 50 metre radius – four objections were received.
The council are also awaiting a reply from the Church of Transfiguration, after identifying the car park of the Bawnogue church as a suitable location for a bottle bank.
Clondalkin councillor Madeleine Johansson said it was “extremely disappointing that not a single location could be identified in the North Clondalkin area.”
“The nearest bottle banks to North Clondalkin is at the Mill Centre in Clondalkin Village,” said Cllr Johansson.
“We need recycling facilities close to where people live and shop so that people can actually use those facilities. We’re spending a lot of time promoting recycling but if you have to drive to find facilities it completely defeats the purpose. We need to change the Development Plan so that all retail centres have to provide recycling facilities on their premises.”
