Fairtrade Town cook up a storm at demonstration
By Maurice Garvey
CLONDALKIN Fairtrade Town held a baking demonstration in the Youthreach Centre in Clondalkin village to showcase the use of Fairtrade ingredients.
Paula Kenny, who hosted the event on January 25, introduced visitors to the wide variety of Fairtrade products that are available locally before handing over to the bakers.
First up was Margaret Sharkey, last year's winner of the Clondalkin Fairtrade Bake Off.
She demonstrated how to make her delicious banoffee pie and banana bread using Fairtrade bananas, chocolate and spices.
Eibhlín Thornton from Candlewood Bakery was up next with her gluten free, vegan coffee cupcakes using Fairtrade coffee, vanilla, sugar and spices.
The audience then got to sample treats and were given recipes to take home with them.
They were also invited to take part in the many events being put on locally for Fairtrade Fortnight (February 26th-March 11th).
Inspired by bakers at the event, there was huge interest in the upcoming Clondalkin Fairtrade Bake Off, which takes place in Áras Chrónáin on March 2, and will be judged by Catherine Leyden.
