Falling To Earth: My summer with Bowie comes to The Civic

As part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, Verdant Productions and The Civic Theatre are presenting the world premiere of Eugene O’Brien’s FALLING TO EARTH: My Summer With Bowie, writes Ryan Butler.

Previews began on September 27, and the show opened at The Civic Theatre on Friday, September 29, and runs through October 15.

Scut Kelly is alone, apathetic, and a caregiver for a father who has never given him much thought.

The song of Ziggy, the slender white duke, and the guy who fell to Earth carrying his Mars spiders were his only sources of comfort.

Right now, he is going to have the most amazing summer of his life, where his dreams will come true when circumstances work together to allow him to meet his idol in person.

Will Scut be able to manage this new world and all of its opportunities, or will he crash down hard back on Earth?

Stephen Jones, who stars in this new one-man show, states that he was drawn to the production because Eugene O’Brien wrote it, it’s part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, it’s being performed in the Civic, and he likes David Bowie.

He got the script “several months in advance” and spent most of the summer (roughly two and a half months) learning the script and perfecting the Offaly accent before three weeks of rehearsals.

After these performances, the team is hoping to take the show on tour and discuss plans as to where they will take it.

Stephen would like to thank his mam and dad, as well as everyone he’s worked with for helping his career get to this point.

Jim Nolan is in charge of directing “Falling to Earth,” which features set design by Brian Mitchell, costume design by Toni Bailey, and lighting design by Tara Perry.
