Family and friends of Cian Marren (6) gather to say goodbye to their little angel

Hundreds of mourners gathered at St Anne's church in Bohernabreena this morning for the funeral of six-year-old Cian Marren from Ballycullen who tragically died after he was struck by a van in Shankill on Friday evening.

The youngster, described as a “dynamo of energy” by Father Michael Hurley, was rushed to Temple Street Hospital on Friday, but sadly passed away on Saturday.

Many of his organs were donated to others, and this morning the community remembered a boy who loved his GAA, loved his sisters and his parents, and loved life.

A number of children wore the colours of St Anne’s GAA club, while a blue and white jersey was placed on the small coffin.

Cian’s parents, Lisa and Liam had asked for those attending to wear bright colours to represent their son’s love of life, and a huge number of people obliged, bringing some light to a tragedy that has affected many in the community.

Fr Hurley expressed his deepest sympathies to Cian’s family and friends, and acknowledged the pain those in attendance were feeling.

He said: “I am aware our words, my words and your words, will fail to express what we really want to say here today.”

Cian’s father Liam also spoke on behalf of the Marren family, and remembered his beautiful son as the angel he was.
