Faughs secure their place in Senior One camogie ranks
FAUGHS Celtic can look forward to taking their first step into Senior One camogie in modern times after they beat Kilmacud Crokes 1-12 to 1-4 to raise the Senior Two Championship title in Abbotstown on Sunday.
While Celtic, who joined forces with Faughs in 2000, have played and won titles at top senior level, this promotion marks a historic breakthrough for Faughs who started their home-grown juvenile camogie section back in 2003.
And last weekend’s win marked the completion of another great campaign that saw them see off the likes of Naomh Mearnog, St Vincent’s and Division One outfit Oliver Plunkett’s.
Against Kilmacud, the Templeogue side blasted out of the blocks last weekend, hitting five points without response through Holly Finnegan, Olivia Rush and Kerrie Finnegan while Saoirse Malin also served up a stunning strike over the bar.
Catherine Costello played a true captain’s role for Faughs, sending two frees between the posts before rattling the net just prior to the halftime whistle.
Taking a seven-point advantage into the second period, Faughs refused to allow Crokes a way back in with Finnegan extending their lead.
Yet the Stillorgan side did produce a late flurry with a goal and a point, but a further three frees by Costello nailed the lid firmly shut on any prospect of a late recovery.
“We always felt that the players had the ability to go and win this,” said Colm Galvin who, together with Sean Buckley and Ciaran Richardson, make up the Faughs management team.
“They are a very determined and talented bunch of players and we always felt that, if they could bring that quality to the game, they would win,” he added.
