Firework rockets terror on senior citizens homes

FIREWORK rockets were on two occasions this week “deliberately” launched at houses in one Tallaght estate, with the first incident targeting a row of senior citizens’ homes.

The first incident happened at 9pm on Sunday night, when around eight rockets were directly launched at a row of senior citizen homes in Tymon, hitting windows and doors and damaging the guttering on one house.

The following afternoon, according to Cllr Mick Duff, a person with their face hidden set off more rockets in the direction of homes and cars on a cul-de-sac within another area of the estate.

According to Cllr Duff (Ind): “These rockets are deliberately being aimed at houses.

“[On Sunday] someone set off about eight projectiles directly at the senior citizen houses.

“These are like Bazooka-type fireworks, they’re multiple rocket launchers.

“We’re not talking about bangers here, these are rockets…the noise of them.

“This is irresponsible, it’s not fun.

“There is the capacity here for serious injury and damage to property.

“There is also no iota of thought being given to the residents and the terror this is inflicting.

“People are feeling very nervous.

“The second incident [on Monday] was in broad daylight when people were minding young children and were out in their front gardens.”

Cllr Duff is now calling for Garda intervention on the issue, as activity ramps up in the run-up to Halloween.

“Fireworks season seems to be from early September right into November”, Cllr Duff said.

“I’m calling on gardai to clamp down on the amount of fireworks going around.

“If people are using them in a secluded field and they’re going off into the air, there’s not a huge complaint.

“However, when they’re being let off in a very closed-in, surburban area that to me is breaching public order.

“These fireworks are coming in from somewhere, someone is storing them and someone is selling them.”

He added: “I would also appeal to people to be very careful.

“These fireworks can cause serious injury to members of the public and to those using them.

“Fireworks are not stable, those responsible are putting themselves at risk and the general public.”

Report any incidents to Tallaght Garda Station 6666000.
