First half goal blitz knocks brave Davis

First half goal blitz knocks brave Davis

THOMAS Davis were unable to defy the odds in the Junior Two Football Championship decider and consequently lost out 4-13 to 0-15 to a Castleknock side that competes two leagues above them in Division Four.

Played at Monastery Road on Sunday, this decider saw the Kiltipper side rocked by four first half goals which proved the exact difference between two teams at the half time break.

Four first half goals proved the undoing of Thomas Davis

Ciaran Millore was the first to find the back of the net for the northsiders after 10 minutes before Dara Warnock hit the first of two for him on the day.

Points from Fran Kivlehan, Dean Givens and Robbie Sharkey helped keep Davis in touch somewhat, but they were left with a mountain to climb when Rob McCor-mack squeeze home a fourth goal for Castleknock from a very tight angle.

Credit to Davis, they refused to throw in the towel and kept battling away in the second period with Kivlehan and Robbie Mearns shooting over while Jimmy Owens put in a big display at right half forward.

Still, four second half frees from Conor Byrne together with points from Eoin Devlin and Kevin Stephens proved more than enough to keep Castleknock out of reach despite losing the second half by two.

John Higgins, who manages this Davis team along with Danny McCann, remained upbeat about his side’s display, saying “I was very happy with the performance in the second half.

“It was just the first half that we were taken to the cleaners, and two of those goals came late in the first half.

“It left us with a lot to do, but the players kept going and we outscored them in the second half.

“It was a very good performance against a Division Four team.

“Our lads have been improving steadily over the last two or three seasons and progression is what it’s all about,” he stressed.

While Castleknock are in need of one win from their two remaining league fixtures to preserve their Division Four status, Davis are through to next month’s Division Six promotion play-off.
