Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell to start in crunch clash for Ireland
TALLAGHT’S Paula Fitzpatrick and Clondalkin’s Hannah Tyrrell have both been named in the Ireland Women’s Rugby team ahead of tonight’s crunch World Cup clash with France at the UCD Bowl.
Only victory will suffice in their final Pool C match if Ireland are to make it through to the semi finals of the competition.
And Tom Tierney’s side will have to produce their very best performance if they are to see off their Six Nations rivals who have rampaged through their opening two games against Australia and Japan by a combined score of 120-14.
In contrast, Ireland have struggled for momentum, managing only a two-point victory over Australia before having to battle back from 14 points down against Japan to earn a 24-14 win.
Fitzpatrick was instrumental in that game, coming off the bench to score two crucial tries that dragged the tournament hosts back for a vital win.
Head coach Tierney has opted to start the St Mary’s College player alongside Ciara Griffin and Claire Molloy in the back row with Tyrell at full back.
“We’ve had lots of tough games against France over the years and we know tomorrow evening is going to be no different” said Tierney.
“They [France] have looked really good in their opening two games of the tournament and they’ll be coming into this game full of confidence.
“It’s a cup final tomorrow night, with a place in the Semi-Finals up for grabs, so we want the players to go out there and give it everything.
“It won’t be easy, but with the crowd behind them, they have the ability to claim a place in the final four” he insisted.
