Five months jail for driver who has 16-year ban and no insurance
A DRIVER who drove without insurance while on a 16-year driving ban was jailed for five months by Blanchardstown District Court.
Judge David McHugh told Wayne Callaghan that his “time was up”.
Callaghan, aged 40, with an address at Harelawn Park, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to having no insurance, no driving licence and no road tax at the Neilstown Road, Clondalkin, on August 17, 2017.
Garda Michael Martin told the court that on the above day he stopped Callaghan in a Nissan Almera.
He said Callaghan had no insurance, no driving licence and no road tax.
Garda Martin said Callaghan had 63 previous convictions including a 16-year ban for no insurance which Callaghan was serving at the time he was stopped.
He said Callaghan had 10 previous convictions for no insurance.
Callaghan’s solicitor, Simon Fleming, said his client was “a nice fellow”. He said Callaghan had spent a total of 12 years in prison but was now working with CASP in Clondalkin.
Mr Fleming said that when Callaghan was released from prison he had turned his life around. He said Callaghan has three children and added that Callaghan had lost three of his brothers to drugs.
Judge McHugh said: “I’m satisfied the defendant’s time is up. He has breached a court order.”
He sentenced Callaghan to five months jail with a 15-year driving ban.
