Frame of Mind
TWO local secondary school students recently won runner-up awards for their entries into a photography competition focussed on positively reframing mental health.
The Frame of Mind photography competition is an annual campaign from Walk in My Shoes, the flagship education and awareness-raising campaign of St Patrick’s Mental Health Services.
Secondary school students from across the country were invited to submit photographs to the competition, showing meaningful moments that positively support their wellbeing.
Last week, an awards ceremony was held in St Patrick’s University Hospital where the winner of the photography competition was named, as were the runners-up.
The first-place winner was Galway student Daniel O’Sullivan, however the two runner-up winners in the competition were from South County Dublin and won €500 each for them and their schools.
‘Promise of Renewal’ by Rachel Davis from Our Lady’s Secondary School in Terenure was commended by the judges.
Her photo showed a beautiful sunset, marking the end of one day and the start of a new one, and symbolising hope.
Also awarded a runner-up prize, Alix Brady from Collinstown Park Community College was recognised for her photo ‘Rocking Out’, depicting a meaningful moment he had with friends.
Frame of Mind judge and photographer, Ruth Medjber said: “Photography is a very powerful creative tool of expression, and this competition provides an important and much-needed platform to reframe mental health.
“I began my photography career when I was in secondary school and when I couldn’t express my feelings I reached for my camera.
“Frame of Mind is an opportunity for students to engage in positive, affirming conversations around mental health, and it is encouraging to see the large volume of entries from all over the country.
“Congratulations to everyone involved, the future of photography in Ireland is in great hands.”
