Fundraising night for family who lost home
By Aideen O'Flaherty
A FUNDRAISING night will be held in Ahernes next month for a family who lost their home in a house fire in July.
The fire started at the house on Heatherview Lawn in Aylesbury, just after 6am on July 27, with gardai treating the fire as an arson attack.
The demolished house
Since then, the community has rallied around the family and raised over €6,000 for them through a GoFundMe account.
The house, which was completely destroyed, will now have to be rebuilt and the funds raised through the fundraiser will help to cover the cost.
Mary Hoey, the fundraiser’s organiser, told The Echo: “The fundraiser will be held in Ahernes, people will be getting their heads shaved, they’ll be getting waxed, and they’ll be growing beards for the month of November and then getting the beards shaved off at the fundraiser.”
The family who lost their home in the fire are hoping to be able to move into their newly rebuilt home in time for Christmas.
Ms Hoey said: “The family are trying to get into the house for Christmas, so that’s what we’re trying to help them do.”
Overwhelmed with how good the community have been
When asked what the affected family thought when they heard about the fundraiser, Ms Hoey said: “They said they were overwhelmed with how good the community have been and what they’re doing for them.”
A raffle will also be held during the event, and Ms Hoey praised local businesses who have already donated items for spot prizes, and also businesses who have offered their services once the house is complete, with Old Bawn Stoves and Fireplaces donating a fireplace in the new house.
Meagen O’Loughlin from Extreme Hair in St Dominic’s Shopping Centre is shaving the hair and beards, while Linda Maritza is doing the waxing on the night.
Anyone who is interested in taking part in the fundraiser night, either by getting their heads or beards shaved, or getting waxed, can contact Mary Hoey on 086 104 6087 to get a sponsorship card.
The benefit night will be held in Ahernes on Friday, November 30 at 8.30pm.
