THE derelict former Gallaher’s site at the junction of Airton Road and Greenhills Road is under the ownership of property tycoon Bernard McNamara, The Echo understands.

Gallaher’s was a cigarette manufacturing plant which shut in 2003, and in recent years the derelict building has been damaged as a result of two fires on the premises.

Last month South Dublin County Council stated that “significant progress” had been made in relation to the condition of the site, and they further stated that the addition of new fences and gates surrounding the property have now made the site “secure”.

Fianna Fail Councillor Charlie O’Connor asked South Dublin County Council for confirmation of the owner of the derelict site, and the council stated that the site is under “private ownership” and as such the council “does not have any interest therein”.

The Echo understands that property developer Bernard McNamara, who was one of the highest-profile developers during the Celtic Tiger, is the owner of the derelict site.

The site was sold in 2015 as part of two lots in a “long-term government investment opportunity” for €11.5 million.
