Gardai and Revenue seize huge amount of tobacco and cash during raids in Dublin
One man has been arrested, and a large amount of illicit tobacco has been seized by Revenue and Customs officers during series of co-ordinated searches in Dublin yesterday.
The raids, in conjunction with An Garda Siochana, took place at various locations in Dublin 7 and 9, and were part of intelligence-led investigations targeting what has been described as “a major Dublin supply and distribution network in the illicit tobacco trade”.
In total, officers and their detector dog Bailey uncovered 230,000 cigarettes and 160kgs of tobacco, while a large sum of cash was also retrieved.
Revenue also seized documentation, electronic equipment, mobile phones and two vehicles.
A 38-year-old Irish man from Dublin and a number of other individuals were interviewed, and a prosecution file will be sent to the DPP.
The illicit tobacco products were of various brands. These included cigarettes branded L&M, Excellence, Marlboro Gold, Richman and Moden.
The tobacco included brands such as Flandria, Amber Leaf and The Turner.
The retail value of the contraband is over €210,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than €168,000.
