Gardai appeal for witnesses as community prepare for funeral of Cian Marren (6)

As the family and friends of six-year-old Cian Marren from Ballycullen prepare for his funeral this morning, Gardai have again appealed for witnesses to the fatal road traffic collision on Friday.

At his funeral this morning in St Anne’s Church in Bohernabreena those attending have been asked to wear bright coloured clothes to represent the youngster’s love of life.

Speaking to Echo.ie this week, St Anne’s GAA coach Adam Doran remembered a ‘lovely, lively’ boy who was beloved by his friends and family.

He said: “I know everyone describes children as a bundle of energy, but Cian really was one. He was just always up to something – he was fantastic.”

Doran added that despite the devastation caused by Cian’s death to his parents Liam and Lisa, and ‘adored’ sisters Ciara and Áine, his family is ‘remarkably strong’.

Cian was struck by a van in the Shankill area at approximately 4:45pm on Friday afternoon and was rushed to Temple Street Children’s Hospital where he died on Saturday.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: “At approximately 4.45pm a serious road traffic collision occurred on the Shanganagh Road, Shankill, Co Dublin, near the Hazelwood estate.

“A white van, travelling in the direction of Shankill Village was involved in a collision with a 6 year old boy.

“The driver of the van has been interviewed by Gardaí. The injured boy was taken to Temple Street Hospital and died on the 29th July 2017 as a result of injuries sustained in this collision.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing to any person who has any information in relation to this collision or to any drivers who may be in possession of ‘Dash Cam’ and who were in the area at the time of this collision to contact the Gardaí at Shankill Garda Station on (01) 666 5900, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”
