Gardai investigating apartment fire in Tallaght as “incident of criminal damage”

Gardai in Tallaght have said the fire that broke out at an apartment block on Cookstown Way this morning is being investigated as “an incident of criminal damage”.

A total of 11 people were rescued from the Gleann Na Heona apartments, with many having to be lifted from balconies on the first and second floors.

Six of those rescued, including young children, were taken to hospital to be treat for suspected smoke inhalation.

Emergency calls were received at around 1:30am this morning when the fire broke out at the building on Cookstown Way, near the Luas stop for Tallaght Hospital.

Speaking to Echo.ie earlier today a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí at Tallaght are investigating an incident of criminal damage by fire which occurred at Gleann Na Heona Appts at approximately 1.30am.

“The block was evacuated and a number of people were taken to Tallaght Hospital for precautionary smoke inhalation. Investigations are ongoing.”
