Gardai urge householders to be ‘alert and vigilant’ because burglaries are on the increase

ACCORDING to the Gardai in Lucan, there has been an increase in residential burglaries in Lucan. A Garda spokesman told The Echo that “thieves are primarily targeting cars parked outside the premises”.
He urged Lucan residents to ensure “your homes are secured”.

He added: “In particular at night-time check that all windows and doors are locked. Also ensure your keys are not on display, especially in the hallway near the front door.
“Keep safe and vigilant, if you see any suspicious activity please contact Lucan Garda Station.”
Speaking to The Echo, Lucan councillor and Mayor of South Dublin County Council Vicki Casserly said: “Following recent notification from the Gardai about recent burglaries in the Lucan area, I urge all residents to be vigilant and follow safety as advised by the Gardai.”
In a recent statement by Garda Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Graham Kavanagh, he said: “I would advise home owners to secure their properties during the summer months, where one in four burglars enter the property through an open door or window. Thefts of tools, equipment and bicycles increase by a third during the summer. An unlocked shed or unsecured bike are easy targets for the burglar.
“Remember to make your home look occupied, particularly if you intend to be away for an extended period. Once your home is locked and alarmed, ask a neighbour to regularly check your property, use timer switches or apps to turn on lights, cancel deliveries, tidy the garden and watch what you post on social media.”
Mayor Casserly also warned holidaymakers to be mindful of what they post on social media.
She said: If you are going on holiday and your home is going to be vacant, be mindful of what you post on social media. Even if you have enabled strict privacy settings, your holiday plans could be shared with unscrupulous people. Don’t post status updates about your holidays while you’re still away.”
