Gas cylinders discovered in the ashes of a blaze on green area in Tallaght

Gas Cylinders TallA WARNING has gone out to the community after four gas cylinders were thrown onto a fire in Tallaght last weekend, a blaze which occurred in close proximity to a number of houses with sleeping families.

The remains of the fire, which was lit on a green space between Glenshane and Rossfield, caused concern for residents on Sunday morning – when they discovered four gas cylinders lying in the ashes.

The discovery prompted residents to contact Tallaght Independent councillor Dermot Richardson, who reported the incident to the Gardaí and notified the council.
He told The Echo: “I got a number of calls on Sunday morning from residents who saw the danger in burning gas cylinders, especially so close to houses and with people asleep in their beds.

“People do burn rubbish on this green, but the burning of gas cylinders is a first and a seriously dangerous thing to do.”

He added: “Some people did report hearing explosions that night and they are now concerned for their families if this type of burning becomes frequent.

“Maybe somebody was trying to make sure that something was destroyed in that fire or it could have been another case of illegal dumping. I don’t know, but either way this was a very reckless act that put lives in danger.”

Cllr Richardson has also appealed to residents to be vigilant and to report any sightings of illegal dumping in their communities.

“I would appeal to people not to place these cylinders on fires or to dump them in public spaces – they have to be disposed of properly.

“When people are dumping illegally, there is a risk of highly flammable items and chemicals making their way onto public spaces, so we all have to be vigilant and report all illegal dumping to the council.

“I would also appeal to whoever burned these cylinders to stop and would encourage others to not follow suit.”

Contact South Dublin County Council on 4149000 or report illegal dumping to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on 24-hour call save number 1850 365 121.
