Goldrick delivers knock-out blow at the death

JASON Goldrick landed a stunning three-pointer right on the buzzer to see Dublin Lions break the hearts of their Templeogue rivals with a 70-68 point victory in the Dublin Men’s Intermediate Cup Final in Inchicore.

In what was a truly nailbiting showdown, the lead changed hands no less than five times in the closing 28 seconds of play, culminating in a stunning winner by Goldrick- a former Templeogue player.

Two free throws by Stephen Fagan had nudged the Reds in front by a point with 1.4 seconds left at which stage Lions called a time-out in order to draw up a last ditch play.

They were unable to execute what was planned, but Goldrick improvised superbly and the Lions faithful erupted.

Templeogue ended the first quarter 22-19 in front but Lions stormed back in the second to go three clear by the break with Keith Brannigan and Ciaran McCormack going hard after the boards.

They managed to maintain that gap by the end of the third quarter, Rob Fagan helping to keep Templeogue in touch with a 23-point haul as did Fiachra O’Rourke on 18.

But all their hopes of raising the prize unravelled at the death when Goldrick executed from distance.
