Graffiti vandals spray ‘tags’ on side of church

A GROUP of graffiti ‘artists’ carried out a shocking attack on the 12th century St Finian’s church in the Glebe, Lucan, recently.

Four different graffiti ‘tags’ were painted onto the walls of the historic church and a gravestone was also vandalised with paint. Each graffiti  “artist” would have his or her own tag.

The shocking incident was first reported on the Society for Old Lucan’s facebook page.

Members of the society reported it to South Dublin County Council via www.fixyourstreet.ie

Lucan Councillor and former Mayor, Paul Gogarty, also requested, via an internal services request system, South Dublin Council to clean off the graffiti.

He said: “It is disgraceful it was targeted in this way. It is a very historic church. When I was a child, I found a skull in the graveyard.

“SDCC has an anti-graffiti team but they seem to be working intermittently at the moment.”

May not be a simple job to remove the graffiti

Cllr Gogarty says that it may not be a simple job to remove the graffiti.

He said: “It might require specialist equipment or need to be referred to another agency to have the paint removed properly without staining the stonework.”

The Echo contacted SDCC to see what was the status of the clean-up, but they did not respond before we went to press.

Near to the church is the historic Eiscir Riada which was one of five roads from Tara in County Meath. The road went from Tara through Lucan, Esker and Clondalkin before finally ending in Bohernabreena.
