Harrington takes EU Boxing silver
KELLIE Harrington returned home from the European Union Elite Boxing Championships in Italy with a silver medal.
The Dublin light-weight boxer, who trains out of St Mary’s BC in Tallaght, made it as far as the final where she lost out to Finland’s Mira Potkonen on Saturday.
Making the top of the podium was always likely to be a tall order for the World Elite silver medallist given that Potkonen had won bronze in last year’s Olympic Games in Rio, beating Katie Taylor in the process.
Harrington can still draw confidence from an impressive campaign that saw her beat Kinga Szalachcic of Poland 4-1 in the Last 16 before carding a 5-0 victory over Denmark’s Ditteajaaja Frostholm in the quarter-finals.
That was followed up by a convincing 5-0 triumph over home boxer Irma Testa in the penultimate rounds, Harrington using her reach to good effect in that bout.
While she was stopped short of the top prize, Harrington’s silver was one of three medals for the Ireland team that helped equal the country’s record return at the 2013 EU Tournament.
Indeed, her compatriot Michaela Walsh beat Azize Nimani of Germany for the 54kg title while Grainne Walsh won bronze in the 69kg field.
