
Harrington takes silver on her return in Bulgaria
KELLIE Harrington of St Mary’s Boxing Club returned home for the Strandja Multi-Nations in Bulgaria with silver.
In what was her return to competitive action since sustaining a hand injury in the European Games back in June, Harrington was pipped on a 3-2 split decision by Finland’s Mira Potkonen in the lightweight decider on Saturday.

She ignited her campaign with a unanimous decision win over Poland’s Aneta Rygielska in the last 16 before seeing off Hanna Okheri of Ukraine and Bulgaria’s Denica Eliseeva in equally convincing manner in the quarter and semi finals respectively.
Yet she had to settle for silver after her narrow reversal against Potkonen who was declared the ‘Best Female Boxer’ of the tournament.
Harrington’s St Mary’s clubmate George Bates was also in action in Bulgaria making it as far as the last eight of the Men’s 63kg division where he came undone against India’s Shiva Thapa.
The Tallaght man recorded a couple of impressive wins up to that point, edging out Lounes Hamraoui of France 3-2 in the last 32 before despatching Kosovo’s Shpetin Bajoku in the next round.
Ireland finished sixth in the rankings tables at the 29-nation tournament and 10th in medals table.
