Started back in November 2019, the Old Neighbourhood of Tallaght Facebook group has in recent weeks brought people on a nostalgic walk back through Tallaght's history, and the people, places and groups that have helped shaped the area into what it is today.
The backdrop for the page depicts Tallaght Village back in the heyday.
The local history is mainly being told through old photographs, as people come together to remember and celebrate Tallaght's past - and the inherent sense of community that has connected us through the decades.
The Facebook group is also reconnecting communities, old neighbours and friends – with talks of reunions in the pipeline!
Started by Clondalkin lads Andru Ó Maonaigh and Gerard Byrne, the popular Facebook group now boasts more than 12,500 people.
Gerard has been collecting historical photographs and stories about local communities here in South Dublin County for a number of years.
“We have a page for Dublin and Clondalkin and we had loads of photos left over for Tallaght, so we just decided to make a page,” said Gerard.
“Over the past few weeks it went from about 400 to over 12,000 members, there’s no way we expected that.”
Here at The Echo we have been following the page, and have put together a small sample of what to expect over on the Old Neighbourhood of Tallaght Facebook group.
The first Leinster 100 Car Race to be held on the Tallaght Circuit was in 1935. This photo captured when the cars were lined up at the starting grid on Main Street, where Bank of Ireland is now.
All-time leading Republic of Ireland goal-scorer Robbie Keane scored 12 penalties in his international career and here is the Glenshane lad taking a tumble in the box for Crumlin United against Cherry Orchard in 1992.
Although, on this occasion the 12-year-old Keane had his penalty saved by goalkeeper James O’Connor.
These local couples are pictured at dinner dance in the early fifties. Frank Keogh and Mary Keeley are on the far left, Christy and Betty Keeley in the centre and Sean Atkinson with Kay Keeley on the far right.
Back when The Echo on Tour was in its height, John Cummins picked up a £10 cheque from his local newspaper for this holiday snap.
Plenty of well-known local faces in this photo from 27-year-old Echo Sport coverage, which was shared into the group by a resident. It captures the moment when Thomas Davis beat Fingallians to the Dublin Under-21 Football Championship title in 1992.
