Heartbreak as dad dies in workplace accident

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Lucan man who died in a workplace accident in Dublin Port last week. James “Jay” Byrne who was in his late 30s and was originally from Ringsend died after he was struck by a steel column.
Mr Byrne leaves behind his partner and two sons.
A Facebook page called Ringsend in Memory of Loved Ones Gone But Never Forgotten said: “A tragic and heartbreaking day for the community when the news of a tragic workplace death on Dublin Port started to reach us. Our deepest condolences go out to the Byrne and Mahady families on the passing of James. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, may he R.I.P.”
The Health and Safety Authority said they are investigating the accident.
A spokesman said: “A man in his 30s was killed after being struck by a steel column at Dublin port on June 6. We are aware of the accident and an investigation is under way.”
Gardai said: “Gardai in Store Street are investigating the sudden death of a man in his 30s following a workplace incident at Dublin Port. Gardai and Emergency Services were called to the scene at Ocean Pier, Dublin Port shortly after 11.30am on June 6.
“The man was taken to the Mater Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
“An examination of the scene was carried out by Gardai and enquires are ongoing.
“The Health and Safety Authority and the local Coroner have been notified.”
