Highlighting recovery process of addiction
THE message that recovery from addiction is possible took centre stage at a talk titled Recovery Day Tallaght on Saturday, which was organised by the Tallaght Addiction Support Project in Fettercairn.
The day featured talks by people in recovery, with the aim of celebrating them and the people who supported them on their journey.
Other guest speakers on the day included Dr Garrett McGovern, a GP with a history of treating addictive disorders, and Mayor Alan Edge.
Tim Murphy, a project leader at the Tallaght Addiction Support Project, told The Echo: “We know that, sometimes, when people achieve recovery, people can draw inspiration from their stories.”
He added: “A lot of people in the audience were very emotional, because what was being spoken about resonated with their own experiences.
“One of the audience members said they understood better what their family member was going through.”
Over 30 people were there on the day, listening intently to what the speakers were saying, and it provided an opportunity to highlight that there is a recovery community in Tallaght.
“I think the drink and drug issue in the area is a serious and very visible problem, and people in the community can get disheartened by it when they see that struggle,” said Mr Murphy.
“But we want to get across that recovery is possible, and that we have success stories happening here all the time.”
Recovery Day Tallaght was held as part of a wider series of events around Tallaght marking Recovery Month, and further information is available HERE.
