Homeless service makes appeal for donations

A HOMELESS service which is nearing 10 years in operation is making an appeal to the public for donations as its “biggest current need is food” and sanitary goods.

Clondalkin Helping Homeless has launched a call out for food donations and is asking people to check their presses for food that is spare or will potentially go unused.

The charity which works to address homelessness in its community is asking also asking people to even throw an extra item into the weekly shopping to donate.

Donations can be made into Bawnogue Youth and Community Centre, with the founder of the group saying the “services are in huge demand”.

“Our biggest current need is food, we take all long lasting and unopened food donations, the like of beans, peas, pasta, rice, cereal etc.,” Cllr Francis Timmons said.

“We also need nappies and sanitary goods.”

Having initially started as a nightly soup run, Clondalkin Helping Homeless has expanded into three core services.

Today, they run emergency supply of sleeping backs and tents, FoodCloud deliveries and a weekly Foodbank.

Since starting with FoodCloud, Clondalkin Helping Homeless has given the equivalent of 74,057 meals, or 30,878kg of food and saved nearly 100kg of CO2.
