Hurricanes finish on top again

THE CLONDALKIN-based Hurricanes secured top spot in the regular season Irish Baseball League following their convincing 17-5 victory over local rivals Spartans in Corkagh Park on Sunday.

The defending champions made a blistering start to this tie and were 9-0 up by the fourth inning.

Starting pitcher Jose Hernandez was in superb form again for the side, pitching seven strong innings, while centre field Tom Kelley and second base Roberto Marquez were among those who chalked up scores.

Alan Fox, at left field worked hard for the Spartans, collecting five hits, but they were unable to deny Hurricanes their third pennant in as many seasons.

The victory means the holders receive a bye through to the Championship Final to be played in Corkagh Park on September 24.

And with Greystones Mariners having already secured the runner-up spot, the Spartans are left to battle it out with Ulster and Black Sox for third place and, with it, a play-off berth.

Regular season winners for the last three seasons, the Hurricanes are now ranked 38th in Europe and, should they win the championship again, they will have the option to attend the European Club Championships.
