Jacob’s Social Club to meet up with Amazon

ONLINE retail giant Amazon has said that it is “anxious to meet” with the committee of the Jacob’s social club to come to a resolution over the future of its building in response to a story featured in The Echo two weeks ago.
Following the story in The Echo about the services to the social club building being cut off, a representative from Amazon got in touch with The Echo, looking to contact the officers of the Jacob’s social club committee.
On Tuesday, the management of Amazon Data Services Ireland Limited (ADSIL) contacted Maria Breen, secretary of the Jacob’s Social Club to organise a meeting with the committee with a view to coming to a resolution on the future of the social club.
Maria told The Echo: “We were put in touch with a representative on behalf of Amazon, and were told that somebody from Amazon would be in touch over the weekend.
“On Tuesday I received a call, and was told that they are anxious to meet and talk with the officers of the committee that include myself, the chairman Derek Toomey and treasurer Julie Keogh.
“They’ve said that something will be organised, so that we could meet next week. I don’t know what the outcome will be, the pensioners don’t really have any money to put towards the club, but we’d be delighted with just getting electricity and water back.”
Previous owners of the site, including Jacob’s, have traditionally paid for the club’s electricity and gas.
As previously reported in The Echo, up to 50 pensioners used the site on a weekly basis and took part in art classes every Thursday, played pool on Sunday and met up for social nights every second Tuesday and Thursday.
The social club currently includes up to 230 lifetime members who would have bought a membership when the club first opened in 1980 – there are also 100 members who pay a membership fee each year to continue with the upkeep of the club.
The Echo understands that work is currently finishing up on the second Amazon data centre located on the Greenhills Road, with work expected to begin on the Jacob’s site in the new year.
