Joe Dowlin and Friends: Award-winning Comedian to play Civic Theatre

Following the triumph of four fully booked performances (two of which took place at the Civic Theatre), Joe Dowlin returns to the main auditorium, and he’s bringing some pals along! writes Ryan Butler.

Award-winning comedian Joe, a native of Tallaght, has been the main attraction at every major comedy club and festival in the nation for the past eight years.

Right now, Joe is one of Ireland’s most sought-after comedians.

Comedians Al Porter (of the sold-out work-in-progress tour), Willa White (of the Talking Bollox podcast), and Paul Marsh (of the Irish dad jokes) will be joining Joe that evening.

‘Joe Dowlin and Friends’ will be TWO hours long with an interval.

It has an age rating of 16+.

This week, we sat down to interview Joe about the show, which will be performed in the Civic Theatre at 8pm on October 14.

Can you give some information about yourself?

Sure! I started off in Jobstown, and now I do events with the Craic Den Comedy Club. The club performs four nights a week in Dublin City: every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Workman’s, and the last Sunday of the month at Juno Bar.

How did the idea for ‘Joe Dowlin and Friends’ first come about?

The Civic contacted me with the biggest gig of my life! I have performed before, but this is the first time I’m hosting my own show with my own support act. I’m really looking forward to it!

What kind of work is involved in preparing for a show like this?

Having jokes and stories ready to tell to the audience, people might relate to these anecdotes if they’re from a working-class area like I am. We also need to build sets. I’m usually very animated when doing shows like this, tending to skip from one end of the stage to the other; it tends to be a blur to me.

What are your future plans after the show?

I have gigs coming up in Vicar Street and Electric Picnic. I also have a gig booked for Boston in November this year. That will give me a lot of space to move around in!

Who would you like to thank for helping you with the show and your career in general?

The Civic Theatre, the Civic’s director of staff, my mam, Jobstown House, John Kilbride, Al Porter, Willa White, and Paul Marsh.
