Jude’s Inters edge through to final
ST JUDE’S edged into the Dublin Intermediate Football Final by the skin of their teeth after St Brigid’s missed the chance to level the match with a late late free on Saturday in O’Toole Park.
Both sides were neck and neck throughout much of the tie, with a Conor McBride point the difference for Jude’s as they beat Brigid’s 1-9 to 1-8.
St Jude's Danny Sutcliffe wins the ball
Diamuid McLoughlin got the Templeogue side off the mark from a free within a minute and this was followed up by a brace of 45s from Richie English to propel them into the lead.
But the northsiders were hot on their heels with full-forward Donal Timoney scoring two exquisite points.
The first was a punt from distance and the second was a low-percentage shot from the touchline after shaking off two Jude’s defenders.
Down the other end, Jude’s responded almost immediately when Dublin hurler Danny Sutcliffe put a high-ball into the box leaving full-forward McLoughlin needing only to get a fist on it.
Just before the interval, ex-Dublin footballer Barry Cahill punched the ball into the back of the Jude’s net to send his side into the break leading 1-5 to 1-3.
Jude’s started strong in the second-half with McLoughlin bringing his tally up to 1-3 for the day while centre-back Eoin McLoughlin chalked up two points to edge his team into the lead.
Three-points down and just minutes left, Brigid’s goalkeeper Eoin Lysaght rifled a 45 over the bar before tricky forward Darragh Doyle brought the Blanchardstown side to within a point.
And they were handed the chance to close the gap completely when awarded a free in the dying second, but Timoney pulled his shot wide.
St Jude’s will now go on to face the winner of the re-scheduled match between St Vincent’s and Ballymun Kickhams in the final over the October Bank Holiday weekend.
