July 2017 Team of the Month Team of the Month – Peter Egan & Brian O’Neill
SALMON Leap Club members Peter Egan and Brian O’Neill combined to win the Men’s K2 title at the National Canoe Marathon Championships.
The two clubmates took the lead from the start and managed to extend their advantage with every lap to secure the prize.
It completed a great day for the Egan household as Peter, also scooped the Men’s K1 title while his sister Jenny captured the women’s equivalent.
The Men’s K1 contest was staged over a 20km course of five 4km laps.
Immediately off the start line a group of six, including Egan, broke away, increasing their lead to more than three minutes by the end of the fourth lap.
With one lap remaining, the leading group was reduced to three boats, Egan, Ronan Foley and O`Neill.
And it was Egan who prevailed, producing a huge surge over the final 200m to take first place.
On another note, Jenny Egan this week lines out in the World Sprint Canoe Championships in the Czech Republic, where she will contest the Women’s 200m, 500m and 5000m events, hoping to better her sixth place finish in the latter when she last contest the Worlds in 2015.
