July 2018 Sports Star of the Month – Rhasidat Adeleke
RHASIDAT Adeleke lit up the athletics track for Ireland in July, winning gold in the European Under 18 Women’s 200m in Hungary before flying out to Finland where she helped the Ireland Womens’ 4x100m Relay team to silver in the World Under 20 Championships.
In the former, the Tallaght Athletics Club star produced a stunning performance that saw her clock a new personal best time of 23.52 seconds on her way to gold.
After qualifying from her heat in second, the 15-year-old competitor continued on to win her semi-final with a new personal best time of 23.77.
Later that same evening she reacted quicker than ever before from the blocks to establish a lead that she maintained all the way to finish line.
In Finland she served up another fantastic performance when she combined with Molly Scott, Gina Akpe Moses and Patience Jumbo-Gula to win their World Under 20 4x100m heat ahead of France and Italy with a time of 44.27 and secure their place in the final.
Unfortunately for Adeleke, she suffered a hamstring pull in the course of her semi-final and had to watch from the sidelines as Scott, Akpe-Moses, Ciara Neville and Jumbo-Gula secured silver.
