July 2019 Sports Star of the Month – Rhasidat Adeleke
JULY was a phenomenal month for Tallaght Athletic Club’s star sprinter Rhasidat Adeleke.
Just two weeks after she landed the National Junior and Under 23 100m title in Tullamore, the 16-year-old athlete delivered a stunning display at the European Youth Olympics Festival in Baku where she stormed to a double gold in the Women’s 100m and 200m.
Tallaght AC’s double European Youth Olympic gold medallist, Rhasidat Adeleke is presented with ‘The Echo Sports Star of the Month’ Award for July by Thos McDermott, Co-ordinator, South Dublin County Sports Partnership (SDCSP). Also pictured are Stephen Leonard, Sports Editor, The Echo, Rhasidat’s mother Ade and brother Abdullah, Sharon Moylan, Sales Manager, Green Isle Hotel and Bernard McCann, Guest Relations Manager, Green Isle Hotel.
“It was unreal” she told The Echo. “It was amazing to do the double.”
It was the latest feat in the rapid rise of this young athlete who won 200m silver at the 2017 Youth Olympics in Hungary before being crowned European Under 18 200m champion the following year, just a week before she helped the Ireland Women’s 4x100m team to silver at the World Under 20 Championships.
Winner of ‘The Echo Emerging Athlete of the Year’ Award in 2017, Adeleke was crowned The Echo Sports Star of the Year in 2018 and is now back in another fiercely competitive line-up of local competitors this year.
