June Rodgers Christmas show back at Red Cow
By Mary Dennehy
YOU know Christmas bells are getting ready to jingle when you hear June Rodgers is returning to the Red Cow Moran Hotel with her annual Christmas show, which this year is choreographed by well-known Strictly Come Dancing coach, Tristan McManus.
Reared in Tallaght Village, and now living on the Firhouse Road with her husband Peter and two dogs Beauty and Poppy, June is bringing her Christmas show to the Naas Road hotel for the 16th year this November 27 – and as usual, she has a packed show full of fun, humour and original characters gracing the stage.
While creating and staying true to a very distinct style of entertainment, June is constantly evolving and updating her characters and material to reflect the times we live in – with the seasoned performer also bringing Strictly come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars coach, Tristan McManus on board this year as the show’s choreographer.
Despite a busy rehearsal schedule, June took five to speak with her local paper.
Any new characters this year?
Yes, lots of new characters – Diana Ross and the Chicken Supremes, Wee Daniel will be making a Strictly Appearance, Wonder (Thunder) Woman will be flying into see us, there will be political characters popping up and Carmen Veranda will be struting her stuff to the Latin beat as will Bruce twice a fortnight.
Where do you get the inspiration for your new characters from?
Well a lot of it is team work, I work with some very talented people. As well as that it is observing what’s going on in the papers, on the web, Facebook and in the charts.
Who is your favourite character?
It has to be Jacinta O’Brien as she has been with me from day one and people still love to hate her.
What’s the thinking behind this year’s show?
Pure family entertainment. This year will open with Strictly Come Dancing as we have the wonderful Tristan MacManus from Strictly Come Dancing as our Choreographer. We also will be going down hits-ville motown with all the greats. We have a superhero section and will be finishing with a rock n roll Christmas.
How did Tristan MacManus get involved?
I met Tristan in the West End when I went to see the show Dirty Dancing, he was one of the dancers and boy what a dancer he was.
I got chatting with him after the show and followed his career over the last couple of years as he was working in America.
Last year he popped up on our screens in Strictly Come Dancing as partner to Jennifer Gibney (Mrs Brown Boys) and I thought this guy has to come home and choreograph my Christmas Show, so I contacted him straightaway and he mentioned that he had never choreographed a show at home and would like to join my team.
How long have you been doing your Christmas show at the Red Cow? What draws you back year after year?
This will be my 16th Year at the Red Cow Moran Hotel. What draws me back is being able to produce and direct my own show from start to finish and for my fan base to be able to come see me each year over the Christmas season and to be guaranteed a good nights entertainment.
What does Christmas mean to you?
To me it means spending good quality time with family and friends and probably too much turkey etc. etc. Sure what’s new!
It must be a very busy time with all of your performances, how do you balance both?
Well you have to be disciplined to be in this business especially when you have so many performances to cover so its home straight after the show each night, a cup of tea and straight to bed.
What is your favourite or most vivid childhood Christmas memory?
It would have to be my mother bringing us into Cleary’s to meet Santa Clause and to see the Christmas lights in Henry Street. It would then be over to the Switzer’s Window Display and then onto the Gaiety Theatre to see Maureen Potter in Pantomime.
What can people expect from this year’s show?
You can expect to a good nights entertainment that will cater for all ages, plenty of fun & laughter with Christmas cheers and also a lovely meal and good wine to follow.
