Killinarden Angling success

The boys’ team from the Killinarden Angling Initiative (KAI) beat off stiff competition to be crowned the winners of the annual Sean McMorrow Memorial Fishing Competition, which is for novice Dublin anglers, in Wicklow last week.
Over 30 young people took part in the competition, which was held by Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative, and it was the first time that KAI had also fielded a girls’ team, from ages nine to 14.

The young people were mentored by a team of Inland Fisheries Ireland staff and Dublin Angling Initiative volunteers, who were able to ensure all fish were released back into the water after the competition.
Pat Ryan from KAI told The Echo: “It was fantastic, it was a brilliant event.
“It’s one of the only youth competitions where, no matter what level you’re at, you can compete.
“It’s one the first competitions that the boys’ team has won.
“It was great for them to get involved, it gave them confidence.”
Other groups that took part in the competition included the Jobstown Action for Youth (JAY Project), WAY Project in Wicklow, Sphere 17 in Darndale and Priorswood, Whitechurch Youth Project, and James’ Street CBS, Dublin 8.
Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative has seen thousands of young people participate in the Sean McMorrow Memorial Fishing Competition since it was founded over 20 years ago.
According to Inland Fisheries Ireland, the initiative has resulted in many of the young people who previously participated in the competition setting up their own fishing clubs.
