‘Lads to Dads’ support group for young fathers

A TALLAGHT resident, who became a dad at a young age in the nineties, is behind a new support group in Tallaght for young or expectant fathers.
Called Lads to Dads, the confidential support group is being held in conjunction with An Cosan, with the first meeting taking place in the Jobstown education centre this Tuesday, September 18.

Living in Tallaght Village, Dave Saunders told The Echo that creating a support group for young dads is something he has wanted to get started for a number of years.
“The reason behind the group is that I was a young father myself back in the 90s,” Dave said.
“It was a very confusing and scary time, as there were so many questions and stresses going on around becoming a parent for the first time.
“I also found there were very little support services available for young fathers and nowhere to go to speak to people in the same situation, to help and prepare for this amazing, life-changing, journey.”
According to Dave, the group is for fathers or expectant fathers who would like to talk about all aspects of fatherhood.
“In this group, we can share life experiences while also supporting each other, as we navigate through the many uncertain stages of fatherhood,” Dave said.
“Ideally, it would be a mix of new and soon to be fathers so we can all learn from each other.
“The biggest stumbling block I feel might be getting men to share their concerns and issues going on in their lives.”
We all have our internal fears and anxieties
Dave’s vision for the group is that it will be a safe, confidential place for men to talk and share what’s really going on for them – with Dave also hoping that in time the group can connect men with other services currently available within the community.
“Even though they may appear fine on the outside, we all have our internal fears and anxieties to deal with daily,” Dave said.
“I hope with the safety of the group, and the knowledge that we can share our life experiences together, knowing, it will not leave the safe space that is our room.”
Dave, who has thanked An Cosan for its support, has encouraged all young and expectant fathers to come along on September 18 between 7pm and 9pm.
