An expert judging panel had the challenging task of shortlisting the top three finalists in each of the six categories from the hundreds of entries received.
In November 2018, Laure donned her raincoat and started picking up litter for an hour on her own.
Every week, she continued, and as the weeks went on, people inquired and joined her and within weeks ‘Crumlin Community Clean-up’ was formed.
Now the community group has over 20 regular volunteers, and contains a diverse mix of different nationalities, and age groups.
They have held over 50 clean-ups, collected over 500 bags of rubbish, cleaned the river Poddle twice, and carried out a range of other activities.
The judges were impressed with Laure’s vision, enthusiasm and determination.
Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail said: “My fellow judges and I were astounded by the remarkable acts of kindness, commitment and amazing feats which many of the entries featured. It was incredibly hard to whittle down the entries as there are so many worthy stories to share. However, we felt that Laure, Flossie and Patricia, along with the other 15 finalists are truly inspirational and are the people who make Ireland a better place.”
