Liam’s gentle smile put families at ease
Liam Barnes joined Dublin Civil Defence in 1973 and was an active member of our organisation right up to the time of his passing.
Liam’s qualities as a person shone throughout his time in Civil Defence, his steely determination to always do the most professional job possible and his gentle big smile that put families with a missing loved one at ease during some very tough searches.
Liam quickly moved up through the ranks of our organisation becoming an instructor in the Rescue Service and later on rising to the highest rank that a volunteer can become, a Commander.
He travelled at the request of other counties to adjudicate rescue competitions throughout Ireland because of his experience, fairness and attention to detail.
Liam was involved in every major event, flooding and searches for missing persons.
His involvement as an instructor to other volunteers has resulted no doubt in lives being saved within our community from his training abilities.
Quite a number of Civil Defence volunteers went on to be involved in the full-time emergency services, as a result of the enthusiasm and professionalism shown by Liam.
For the last eight years Liam has been in charge of our Haggulands and has responded to many flooding incidents throughout the country where his cool calm way of dealing with distressed families, cut off by the floods made the difference and a far safer operation.
Liam was well known within his own community in Bohernabreena where he was involved with the local GAA Club and in the local Tractor Run that raises money for charities.
Liam was always willing to pass on his experiences and advice to other upcoming officers and volunteers.
Liam’s passing has rocked the foundation of our Organisation but everything that Liam was involved in was always built to last.
Liam served his country and his community well and will be missed but the legacy he leaves behind will serve Dublin Civil Defence in the future.
