Libraries innovative boxing project benefits young children

A GROUP of 14 children who were part of an innovative boxing project in North Clondalkin Library visited Palmerstown Boxing Club last week to mark their completion of the programme.

The children, who are aged between 10 and 12, are the third group to have completed the library’s JumpStart Boxing Academy programme.

They got to experience a real-life boxing club environment last Thursday, June 1, when they visited Palmerstown Boxing Club with their coach Paddy Jennings.

Rosena Hand from North Clondalkin Library, who has helped to facilitate the programme, told The Echo: “The children from the latest JumpStart Boxing Academy were brought by taxi from North Clondalkin Library to Palmerstown Boxing Club, to see what a real-life boxing club looks like.

“There was an air of excitement amongst the children as they entered the boxing club.

“All participants were given the opportunity to use the equipment in the gym – with some even entering the boxing ring.”

The children have been put through their paces over the past few weeks as members of the boxing academy, and the fulfilment the children have drawn from the experience is evident to Ms Hand.

“Feedback has been very positive from participants, and friends have been made along the way,” she explained.

“I think all participants have benefited from being involved in the JumpStart Boxing Academy.

“Benefits have ranged from weight loss, improved cardiovascular fitness, strength and conditioning, discipline and respect, to improved mental health.”

Any parents who want to sign their kids up for the boxing academy can contact the library on (01) 414 9269 or email ncl@sdublincoco.ie to be added to a waiting list for future rounds of the JumpStart Boxing Academy.
