Light up and be visible this Christmas
By Mary Dennehy
LIGHT up and be visible is the road safety message being promoted by local gardai and South Dublin County Council through a joint awareness initiative.
The Christmas road safety initiative is part of Operation Open City, An Garda Siochana’s Christmas and New Year strategy – with pedestrians, cyclists and children being encouraged to light up.

Motorists are also being reminded to check that all of their vehicle bulbs are working, and to check lights regularly.
According to gardai at Tallaght: “The awareness initiative will be targeting vulnerable road users – cyclists, pedestrians and children.
“We’ll be giving out hi-viz jackets and small LED lights and encouraging people to light up, be visible.
“We will also be reminding motorists from an enforcement point of view the importance of a car having working bulbs.
“Motorists should check their car and make sure everything is working.”
Gardai and members of South Dublin County Council were in The Square shopping centre on Thursday, December 20, during which they met with people of all ages and handed out hi-viz jackets, LED lights and information.
