Lions send the KUBS packing

DUBLIN Lions got off the mark in Division One of the Men’s National Basket-ball League following an 82-90 point overtime victory against KUBS in Greendale on Saturday.

Having suffered a loss to former Super League outfit Éanna in their season opener the previous week, the Clondalkin side was looking to quickly bounce back against another side that had dropped down from the top ranks of Irish basketball.

Yet after a poor start in which they trailed by eight, they managed to get it back to four by the break.

With American Gareth Collins making his pres-ence felt with 23 points and Muhamed Sabic top-scoring on 24, they worked their way back to force overtime, during which their superior fitness told.

“We have a very big squad and we rotated loads,” explained Lions Head Coach Rob White.

“In overtime we scored 18 points in five minutes whereas in the four quarters we had been getting 12 and 14 so that showed our fitness levels,” he told The Echo.

Next up for the Lions will be a trip to Northern Conference table props Titans who are without a point after their opening two games.

Still White will not be looking past this test saying: “They [Titans] are a young side and they have a very good American so we can’t take them lightly.

“Our players are very young and they’re still a bit jittery. This win [against KUBS] will help settle them and if we can get another one in Titans that will give us some momentum,” he said.
