Local bowlers set for return to European Youth C’ship stage
SEVERAL local tenpin bowlers are still hoping to get the chance to return to the European stage before year’s end.
Tallaght pair Sean Staines and Taylor Williams, together with Mark Dunne from Palmerstown and Conor Fetherston from Walkinstown were due to compete in the European Youth Championships in Tilburg in the Netherlands last month, but the event was rescheduled for October 7-17 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Under coaches David Staines and Eddy Wattimena, the four will compete in singles, doubles and four-man events, hoping to figure among the tournament’s top four that will continue on to battle it out for the overall title.
This will be no easy task give that no less than 32 countries will be represented, but having lined out on this stage before, the Irish boys will be hopeful of making an even more serious impact this time around.
The team had been training for this event since before Christmas, hitting the lanes three times a week, but such preparation has now been put on hold.
All four bowlers have played their part in Triple Crown success for Ireland over the past two of years, although hopes of repeat-ing such a feat in 2020 were scuppered when this year’s contest, scheduled to take place in England in August, was cancelled.
