Local Property Tax rate to be decided on in September

COUNCILLORS will meet in September to vote on whether to increase or decrease the rate of local property tax (LPT) in South Dublin County.
LPT was introduced in 2013. For the last three years in a row, local councillors have voted to reduce the LPT by 15 per cent below the national property tax rate.
Provisions within the Finance Act, allow elected members of a local authority to set a local adjustment factor within the range of +/- 15 per cent of the basic rate, or they may decide not to adjust the basic rate at all.
In September 2016, councillors voted 33-2 in favour of reducing the rate of property tax by 15 per cent.
According to SDCC, an increase or decrease to the local adjustment factor will affect the level of services to be provided by the council in 2018.
They say an increase of 15 per cent would provide additional funding of €4.7 million for council services activities in 2018, and a decrease of 15 per cent would reduce the funding available to provide these services by the same amount.
Residents made submissions on the LPT rate for the county to the council up until the deadline on August 16.
A decision will be made at a council meeting in September 2017.
