Local radio station seeks equipment upgrade

By Aideen O'Flaherty

LIFFEY Sound FM is hosting a fundraiser later this month to get much-needed new equipment for the volunteer-led community radio station.

The not-for-profit station was set up in 2002 to serve the community of Lucan, and it currently has a listenership of roughly 5,000 people.

The Lucan Spa Hotel will play host to the fundraising event, which will feature a performance by the Lucan Gospel Choir.

Gary Gibson, a Liffey Sound FM DJ and board member, told The Echo: “The equipment in the station isn’t the best, and it’s run on a shoestring budget.

“A lot of the equipment we have in the station needs to be replaced.”

The station was recently licensed for a further ten years to serve the local community, which Gary explained is at the centre of the station’s focus.

“We broadcast with a local focus – we provide that local link that you don’t get on commercial radio stations.

“I try to involve as much of the community as I can in my show.”

He added: “The radio station is a valuable outlet for local people, and it’s a great training ground for local students who learn how to present and produce radio shows and podcasts.”

Gary also added that the station is always looking for new volunteers who may be interested in helping out.

The Liffey Sound FM fundraiser is taking place in the Lucan Spa Hotel on September 29, with tickets for the concert priced at €12, or you can purchase a ticket for €25 which will include dinner.

Dinner will be at 6pm and the concert will start at 8.30pm. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the radio station.

You can find more details on the Liffey Sound 96.4 FM Facebook page or from the station’s website, liffeysoundfm.ie.
