Local road closures on Sunday

Maurice Garvey

WITH the equivalent of the capacity of seven All-Ireland finals attending the Pope’s Mass at Phoenix Park om Sunday, residents living within Controlled Access Zones (CAZ) – including Ballyfermot, Bluebell, Inchicore, Chapelizod and Kilmainham – expect it to be a day to endure.

The CAZs are in place on Sunday from 6am to 11pm.

Authorised vehicle access within the controlled zones is available only for residents with permits to travel to work on Sunday.

The AA has been told that local access within the CAZ will be facilitated as much as possible.

On the southside, closures start at Grand Canal, with bridges closed from 8am.

The N3/Navan Rd, N4/Lucan Rd and N7/Naas Rd will be closed at the M50 interchange with traffic diverted south/north on the M50.

Attendees going to the Phoenix Park have been encouraged not to drive and to use public transport.

If you have a ticket for the Pope’s visit, public transport is free in the Greater Dublin area.

Dublin Bus will have a Sunday service. Road closures will mean some buses will be diverted but the NTA says customers will be informed of any changes to their route.

The Luas Red Line will have no service between Blackhorse and Smithfield between 7am and 10pm on Sunday.

A key message from authorities is to expect heavy traffic of Sunday, and if going to the event, to allow for plenty of time and prepare for a very long walk.

For the latest on traffic updates, check the Twitter accounts of AA Roadwatch, Dublin City Council Live Drive, and An Garda Síochána.
